Garbanzo Greatness

On Sunday I made a very nummy garbanzo bean salad with fresh home grown Jersey tomatoes, fresh home grown basil, red onions and drizzled on some balsamic vinaigrette.

I chopped up some leftover chicken threw it in there and brought it in for lunch. It was a nice change from the usual salad.

While munching on my luscious legumes I decided to look up the nutritional information just because...I had nothing better to do.

These little beans pack some good stuff in there!

Stolen from Wikipedia:

One hundred grams of mature boiled chickpeas contains 164 calories, 2.6 grams of fat (of which only 0.27 grams is saturated), 7.6 grams of dietary fiber and 8.9 grams of protein.

And this I did not know: "Chickpeas also provide dietary calcium (49-53 mg/100 g), with some sources citing the garbanzo's calcium content as about the same as yogurt and close to milk."

So...eat more Garbanzo's!

They do a body good!

Thanks for the recipe. Garbanzos aren't my favorite, but every time i see Jersey and Tomato in the same sentence, I gotta say, "Hey, Buddy, What's Up!?" That's one thing that would convince me to move back to the Garden State. Say what you will about California, but I haven't had a good tomato in the 15 years I've lived here.

Tom,

We have great tomatoes up here in Washington state.

Shazza,
Think about adding some feta cheese to that salad. The best is made from goat or sheep milk. Yummy! We eat lots of garbanzo beans, because Sylvia went total vegetarian. Not vegan. We still eat animal products, they just can't die for the cause. I, of course, still like to partake in dead flesh...my favorite three food groups are pork, bacon and ham:D

I love chickpeas, but I didn't know what you strange Colonials called them until now.
Garbanzo? That sounds like a mad Italian circus performer.

I've been compiling a dictionary of American names for foodstuffs … cilantro for coriander leaf, zucchini for courgettes (I won't go on but the list is LONG); what IS it with the re-naming thing?

Tom - I do have to agree Jersey tomatoes are the best.

Vic - M and I are not big feta cheese fans, but thanks for the idea. M makes an awesome rice and beans using pork...to die for!

Dive - you know what...growing up we always called them chick peas and then I went to the store and had a hard time finding them. I finally asked and someone said..."Oh, you mean garbanzo beans?"

Now I just like to say garbanzo because as you said it sounds like a mad italian circus performer. Ladies and Gentlmen...now presenting...the Great Garbanzo!

I make a really nice curry with garbanzos and green pepper, onion, raisins and coconut - with a blend of curry and ginger. It goes really well over basmati rice - occasionally I add diced potato as well. I love the chick peas!

Your salad sounds delish! I noticed it in the pic with the following post, but had not read this one until today.
