When I was a kid one of my very favorite TV shows was The Monkees!
Peter Tork
Davy Jones
Micheal Nesmith
Micky Dolenz
I had sort of a crush on Micky - he was goofy and I always fall for the goofy ones. Peter was goofy too, but he was kind of stupid and I like to see some brain activity around in there. (In reality though, Peter was actually smart...he just played dumb). Davy Jones was the "cute" one...the one that all the girls swooned over and Micheal Nesmith was the "smart" one. He used to annoy the heck out of me...don't know why really. I think it was that goofy hat he always wore. He probably has permanent hat hair now.
Anytime a group of four of my friends got together we'd grab each other by the waist and started the Monkees walk:
Here we come...
walkin' down the street...
we get the funniest looks from...
everyone we meet...
Now come...admit it...you've probably done this yourself at least once in your silly childhood. Heck...I think I did it last year at a library conference walking back a bit inebriated to my hotel.
eeeks
Anyhoo - as far as songs go, anything that Micky sang was my favorite so I decided for this weeks fuuuunky fun bit I'd compare the Monkees version of "I'm a Believer" with Smash Mouth's version.

How fun is that?
Good lord how young they were!
Look at little Davy Jones groovin' with his bad self, swinging those hips and playing his tambourine! You can tell that Micky couldn't actually play the drums at all, you can almost see him counting out the rhythm.
Next up - Smash Mouth : PLEASE CLICK HERE...THE EMBEDDING FEATURE HAS BEEN DISABLED
Smash Mouth did a really fun version of this song and for me to say I almost like it as much as Mickey's version is a lot!!! I like the fact that they "kicked it up a notch" without going overboard to re-create the song.
Most people associate this song with the movie Shrek nowadays, but I will always think of Micky Dolenz and the Monkees!
How about you all? Any preferences to either one?

I was such a huge Monkees fan in the sixties, Shazza and I confess to having everything they ever recorded on my iPod.
They are guaranteed to raise a smile on even the darkest day.
What! Only one comment. Wow.
Believe it or not, I have the Monkees Greatest Hits on cd. I was astounded to find that they are really, really good. Their lyrics are terrific, some of their music is rather like The Who - they even have a rather dark side to them that I really like.
Listen to them again, you'll be surprised.
Michael Nesmith was my fave, but Peter Tork was okay too. Davy Jones was too girly for me.
