Back from Chicago

WE had a wonderful time!

I got to see my son graduate from Loyola University, I met his girlfriend of 2 years finally, we walked all over the place and saw lots of interesting things, we met a blog pal and just had a really nice weekend away!

Unfortunately I have so many things to catch up on today that I really can't do a full blog post but I'll leave you with a few pictures!

Here is M having a session with Bob Newhart near the Navy Pier!

My newly graduated son and his beautiful girlfriend!

Some guy doing some very odd things in Millenium park!

The Bean!

And an nice evening meeting Deborah from the Middle Girl Blog! I am in the center and M is on the right.

It was great meeting you Deborah!

We arrived back home early Sunday afternoon and just plopped. I took a nap (of course) and M watched baseball (naturally).

Now off I go to cut the grass before my neighbors complain and run a bunch of errands.

I hope all of the "Mom's" out there had a great Mother's Day!

Will catch up with everyone soon!

Looky at what I got!

I got a new toy!

M bought me a point and shoot digital camera - isn't she the bestest?

I need to charge the battery up but I've been able to play around with it a bit and take some pictures and one silly video of my dogs.

This is the MESS that I call my office. I really need to clean it. I can't find a damn thing.

Some twisted tines

A teapot wind chime my daughter for my birthday

Some flowers I was playing around with the color thingy.

A view of my back yard through my dining room window.
That's all for now.
I need to learn what all of the buttons and do dad and thingy ma-jiggers are on this thing but I'll probably be posting a lot more photos!
Cheers!

Musical Musings

My apologies to you all.

I had in my mind to have a "guest poster" today. The Marvelous Miss "M". She reads my blog quite often and has suggested a song or two to post on occasion.

We discussed it.

I know she picked out a song.

I asked her about it last night so I could write it all up today.

And we BOTH forgot which song it was.

Ain't gettin' old fun?

Then - things got busy at work and I spaced out there for a little while and ...

Excuses, excuses, excuses!

:::sigh:::

SO....I found myself scrambling around for something to post.

Finding no inspiration on the 3500 songs I have on my iPod, I went to my vinyl collection to see what kind of obscure piece o' musical brilliance I could WOW you all with.

You all have seen my posts...you know my taste in music is crap...but it's FUN crap!

I found a few albums that I think don't belong to me. Or at least not originally anyway. I may "borrowed" them from someone else and then have forgotten to return them later. My memory has always been a bit flaky.

Conveniently so.

A few things I learned about my vinyl collection that I never realized before:

  • I have 1 too many Barbra Streisand Albums (I have 2)

  • I have a few weird soundtrack albums: A Clockwork Orange. Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Chorus Line and Little Miss Sunshine (how's that for diverse)

  • I hope that if someone found these records someday, they don't think I'm complete dork. (that will be hard)

  • I think I have 1 too many Anne Murray albums too. (I have 4)

    • There are some interesting highlights though:

      • I forgot I had Stevie Nicks Bella Donna album.

      • The Debbie Harry KooKoo album cover still freaks me out.

      • I think I own the only album Quarterflash ever made.

      • When the hell did I buy Paul Simon's Graceland album and why?

      Hmmmm...oh well.

One little gem shined out through all the rest though. I had completely forgotten I had this and I just grinned from ear to ear as soon as I saw the cover.

Gilda Radner Live from New York!

This album never fails to cheer me up when I'm feelin' down. I LOVE Gilda! She was such a cutie and so talented too. She is surely missed.

I looked at the back cover and there are all over her characters that she created over the years:

      Candy Slice

      Emily Litella (Nevermind!)

      Lisa Loopner

      Rhonda Weiss and the Rhondettes

and of course - Rosanne Roassnadanna!

I don't have a turntable anymore unfortunately so I can't play this at the moment, but I found a few segments on YouTube and I have the VHS of this show that I still watch occasionally.

Gilda was another one of those comic geniuses whose life was cut way too short.

So for this weeks Musical Musings I leave you with the opening song from that performance and hope it brings a little smile to your day!

      Hooray for holiday weekends!

It's Labor Day weekend here in the states. The unofficial end of the summer!

      GOOD BYE TOURISTS!

      Thanks for your money though!

Kids are going back to school, the days are getting shorter...and a bit cooler.

      ahhhhhhhhhhhh...I love it!

Last night I took a walk down to the river to watch the end of the season fireworks display. Our town puts on concerts every week during the summer and once a month, during June, July and August they have a fireworks display. Unfortunately, they've been cancelled for various reasons so they were advertising a Fireworks Extravaganza for last night.

Well, it wasn't well planned out but there were a lot of them.

They definitely shot off the full load!

I think I had more fun watching the kids run around.

There is a little park down at the end of our development which runs right along the Metedeconk River. At one time there was a little beach there too, but the geese have kind of taken over that. You can't walk too far without stepping in goose poop unfortunately.

A lot of families were out to watch the fireworks which was supposed to start around 9:00 pm. I got there just after nine, found a good seat and just stared out at the water. (more staring...what's up with that?)

A group of kids were running around like...well...like kids! It was past their bed times...they were all hyper and excited to see the fireworks and the parents were clumped together in small groups chatting away and getting caught up.

I sat right in front of the swing set. Two kids - a boy and a girl, were having a "I can go higher than you contest" that lasted about 5 minutes. The boy gave up. The girl however continued to swing for nearly 30 minutes!

      She was in a zone.

She was singing these little made up songs like:

"I'm sooooooo exciiiiiiiited to seeeeee the firewooooooorrrks...I caaaaaaan't waaaaait until they staaaaaaaaart."

      There there was the song:

"Melissaaaaaaaaaaa iiissss my very best friend in the wooooooooorrrrllld.......yeeeessssss...Melissaaaaaaa is my verrrrrry beeeesst frieeeeeeenddddd....laa laaa laaaaa"

She went on to sing about growing up and getting married and how much she loves to swing.

If you ever saw Gilda Radner do her Judy Miller routine...this little girl was exactly like that!

Oh...to be a little kid again and just swing on a swing for 30 minutes singing your little heart out and not caring at all who was listening.

If I tried that now...first I would probably get sick from being on the swing...the motion makes me nauseous and second...I'd probably be taken away to the funny farm or arrested as a potential pedo!

Anyway...for the inner child in me I wanted to post a song that just puts me in a silly mood every time.

Back in the 70's a movie came out that instantly became a cult classic.

It's the story of Brad and Janet and how a flat tire leads them to the weird and wacky world of Dr. Frank-n-Furter.

They meet the incestuous Riff Raff and Magenta, ditzy Columbia and Bad Boy Eddie and of course...Rocky.

I was a Rocky Horror Picture show follower. Saw it 23 times in the theatre where I brought my toilet paper, toast, water pistol, deck of cards, and lighter...and dressed up in costume (I was sort of a Magenta character).

I acted out the parts, sang all the songs and of course...I did the Time Warp!

      So....farewell to summer and remember:

It's just a jump to the left:

      Happy Weekend all! Enjoy!

      Peace

      Friday fffffbbbbbblllllllpppppptttttttttt

Ok...I'm still not feeling very blogative today and since I posted 5 songs yesterday...I didn't dare nauseate you with more crap...

      ...sooooooooooooooooo...what to do?

I will leave you with these three commercials that may tickle your funny bone!

First up - New airline rates are going into effect so I thought it would be nice to advise you what to expect if you are traveling by air anytime soon.

      As always...exact change is appreciated:

Next: Hate Crocs? You're not alone!

      "Give the finger to fashion!"

Last but not least...invisi-bandages...hang in there with this one:

      Have a nice weekend all!

      Peace!

      Semi-conductor

      Definition:

A partially conductive solid: a solid material that has electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator

      That is one definition.

      The other is:

A 71 year old white male armed with a baton and a odd sense of humor!

Meet my Dad - the semi-conductor!

This past weekend he was invited to be the guest conductor at a special July 4th concert with the Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra.

Quite an honor don't you think?

      I'm so proud of him!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend but dear ol' Dad filled me in on all of the details.

He was asked to lead the orchestra in John Philip Sousa's wonderfully patriotic song: Stars and Stripes Forever.

(If you are unfamiliar with the tune...click on the hperlink to get an idea what it sounds like. You'll probably recognize it once you hear it.)

My father is quite the performer. He does a wonderful rendition of Boris Karloff singing the Bee Gee's hit: Lonely Days.

(You're trying to picture that in your head now aren't you?)

Put my Dad up on a stage and in front of a few hundred people in the audience and an orchestra at his command?

      ohhhhhhhhhhhh....lordy!

I'm truly sorry I wasn't there to see this because this is what happened...and this is a direct "cut and paste" from an e-mail he sent me:

"Before I began, I told the audience that I was an old 'rock & roll' guy and I was used to having backup singers. I then asked the audience to sing the unauthorized words to the refrain, that are, "be kind to your webfooted friends," etc. When we got to that point it seems that the entire audience of about 300, vocally joined in the refrain. It was GREAT!!! "

      :::sigh:::

      Gotta love him!

Booth duty, an attempted nap, a great dinner and a wedding

I have the afternoon "booth duty" shift today, so I was able to "sleep in in a bit".

Normally, I don't sleep in, but I hadn't really slept much the previous night. My plane got in much later than I wanted and by the time I got to my hotel and settled it was 12:00 pacific time, but my body was telling me it was really 3:00 am eastern time.

I have become a really bad sleeper lately. I get anxious about not getting enough sleep and then I end up tossing and turning telling myself: SLEEP, dammit...SLEEP!

It has the opposite effect obviously and I end up tossing and turning and looking at the clock.

Sometimes I can't even sleep after taking a sleeping pill.

Anyway - I had an 8:30 AM appointment on Saturday, so....in my usual anxious about sleep frenzy...I didn't sleep. Well, maybe a little hear and there, but definitely not a restful sleep.

I managed well through my morning appointments, and booth duty and actually got to leave the conference early! I headed straight to my hotel for a nap.

Napping used to be an activity I enjoyed. Since I was little I remember my Mom taking an nap in the afternoon and I used to lie on the opposite side of the couch from her and kind of tangle my feet in hers and we'd both take a little snooze. Sometimes I would just lie as still as I could and watch her sleep. She looked so beautiful sleeping...and I would not want to wake her up. After about an hour or so...she'd would slowly wake up and we'd play this little footsie game for a while. Pushing our feet back and forth...kind of wrestling to see who could make each others knees bend first.

When my kids were little, whenever they took a nap...I did to. It was our cuddle time and all three of us would look forward to it. Just listening to their quiet breathing and inhaling the smell of their hair and skin would immediately calm me down and relax me.

Usually I would wake up to little eyes just staring at me.

I don't know how you know that someone is looking at you when you are asleep, but I think most parents can tell you that if their child comes into their room in the middle of the night and just stands by the bed without making a sound...it wakes you up in an instant.

Call it instinct or whatever...it's kind of a freaky thing.

So...back in the present day...and up to my hotel room, I pulled all of the blinds closed, hung the "please do not disturb" sign on the door and lay down for a bit of a snooze. I had plans for dinner with a friend that evening, so I set my alarm just to make sure I wouldn't "oversleep".

I crawled into the bed...got the pillows just right and slowly drifted off to.....the...sound....of....

      What the fa?!?!

Construction on the floor below me.?

      AAAAAGGGGGGHHHH!

It wasn't really loud noise, but more of a consistent: bang, bang, bang, bang....pause, pause, pause...then another, bang, bang, bang, bang.

Sometimes the pauses were a bit longer and I'd think..."oh yay!...they've stopped". I'd snuggle into my pillows again...kind of start to drift off...and the freakin' noise would start up.

      ugh

Stuff like this happens to me at home too. I would go to take a nap and as soon as I was falling off into slumberland either the phone would ring or more likely my dogs would start barking their little heads off.

The little buggers would time it perfectly too.

I'd start nodding off...they bark...I tell them to shut up....I start nodding again...they bark...I yell at them to shut the hell up...and off I'd go to try and sleep and the little fuckers start barking yet again.

I should just give up on naps. They make me more tense and anxious than relaxed and restful anymore.

      :::sigh:::

Finally resolved that I was not going to get a nap in, I got up and putzed around on the computer for a while - work stuff, called M to check in and let her know I was safe and sound and it was hot and humid here in California and then got ready for dinner.

I had a great dinner with an ol' friend who I haven't seen in almost 10 years! She and her partner live in Long Beach and they drove out to see me. We went to Joe's Crab Shack...I guess it's a chain restaurant, where the food is so-so, but it was a lot of fun.

L was very curious about a drink they had on the menu called a Shark Attack. It was primary blue liquid, with red grenadine syrup floated on top and a plastic shark sticking out.

20 years ago...I may have tried it...nowadays...I have 2 glasses of wine or 2 beers and I'm done.

It's great to catch up with old friends. I've been lucky to have been able to do that on the past 3 business trips I've been on...so I will count those as blessings for sure!

After dinner - I came back to my room and thought I'd go to bed early and try to play catch up on my sleep.

I don't have booth duty until 1:00 - no appointments in the morning...nothing to be anxious about and I slept like the dead until about 7:30 am!

      YEAH BABY!

      I feel so much better.

I ordered up some room service for breakfast...and set down to finish my book when I heard some kind of drumming noise?

It almost sounded like a marching band.

Well, since I was well rested and relaxed...this noise did not irritate me in the least bit...it sounded kind of happy and celebratory so I checked outside to see what it was.

      A wedding!

Or the after wedding celebration I guess.

In the parking lot...lot's of brightly colored middle eastern men and women were dancing around in celebration of some kind.

They were having a good ol' time dancing in the parking lot. I kind of wanted to join them.

I watched for about 15 minutes. They would make a circle around the happy couple, then break apart and then other people would be in the center...maybe the parents...grandparent...then they'd break apart and so on and so forth.

Finally - bride and groom climbed into the car that had two big flowered hearts on the hood and drove away with everyone shouting and cheering!

Best of luck to you both! I waved from my hotel room!

I didn't even mutter my usual sarcastic - "suckers" under my breath!

      ahhhh...it's a good day!

I'm off to a shower and to get ready for booth duty. Not exactly the most thrilling thing to do, but eh...it's only for a few hours.

I hope you all are having a great weekend in your part of the planet!

      Be well!

A salute to the assholes of the world

      No...really!

A spa in Russia has just unveiled an 5 foot high, 800 pound bronze enema statue with a banner declaring: "Let's beat constipation and sloppiness with enemas"!

The crowd responded with flatulent applause!

      Funny blog of the day

I just read this post over at Okay Seriously about Kayaking for the first time...it cracked me up!

      Thought I'd share!

      Shout out

...to Sam over at Quiet Would Be Nice. We met in a nice little coffee spot down in Philly. Very nice lady...had a nice time. She's like the Mayor of 10th and Walnut...everyone kept dropping by to say "Hello!" I also have to thank her for introducing me to the Dream Garden a collaboration by Maxfield Parrish and Tiffany. It's a beautiful mosaic that was only 1 block from where I work and I never knew it was there!

It's absolutely stunning...if you are ever in Philly...you HAVE to check it out!

It's nice to make a new friend...so that had me smiling for the rest of the day!

      Hey Sam!

Another BIG shout out to Kat over at Poetikat's Invisible Keepsakes! She has a little survey going and if you have a moment...please stop in and say hello! She's an Irish lass and you know how special we are!!! I had to admit to her that I don't always "get" poetry, but I like a lot of her poems...they are easy for my simple brain to handle!

      Hey Kat!

I'm off to Arizona for a few days. Not sure how much blogging I'll do while I am there baking in the freakin' heat. Last time I checked the temps were already in the high 90's and should reach 100 + while I'm there. And don't tell me it's a dry heat...that's B.S. I don't like the heat....PERIOD! My body is more adept to cold damp chilly climates.

Now I am scurrying around doing last minute laundry and a bit of work before I stuff myself into that little airplane seat for 5 hours.

Be well all...will check in when I have time!

It's not the size of the cigar...

      but how you smoke it!

I finally finished up my last roll of film from the UK. I wasn't really happy with any of them. So I am not posting any. The day was cloudy, I was kind of rushed and...well...I'm coming up with all kinds of excuses aren't I?

I do have to share just one with you though - check out the gangsta's in this shot:

This was taken in a restaurant in Liverpool. We were just about to leave when I saw these guys! It was a stag party and the Groom to be is in the center with the big cigar (in his dreams).

He was PISSED! (drunk) I could barely get a coherent sentence out of him, but he did warn me that if I didn't get his good side I'd be wearing cement shoes!

This is one thing you don't really see in the states. The Hen parties and Stag parties where they all get dressed up. I think it's hysterical and love the fact that they all get into it.

I wish the newlyweds well and a long and happy life together...I just hope she wasn't dressed as Bonnie Parker for her hen party...that may be a bad omen!

      Funnnnky Friday

When I was a kid one of my very favorite TV shows was The Monkees!

      Peter Tork
      Davy Jones
      Micheal Nesmith
      Micky Dolenz

I had sort of a crush on Micky - he was goofy and I always fall for the goofy ones. Peter was goofy too, but he was kind of stupid and I like to see some brain activity around in there. (In reality though, Peter was actually smart...he just played dumb). Davy Jones was the "cute" one...the one that all the girls swooned over and Micheal Nesmith was the "smart" one. He used to annoy the heck out of me...don't know why really. I think it was that goofy hat he always wore. He probably has permanent hat hair now.

Anytime a group of four of my friends got together we'd grab each other by the waist and started the Monkees walk:

      Here we come...
      walkin' down the street...
we get the funniest looks from...
      everyone we meet...

Now come...admit it...you've probably done this yourself at least once in your silly childhood. Heck...I think I did it last year at a library conference walking back a bit inebriated to my hotel.

      eeeks

Anyhoo - as far as songs go, anything that Micky sang was my favorite so I decided for this weeks fuuuunky fun bit I'd compare the Monkees version of "I'm a Believer" with Smash Mouth's version.

Here we go - The Monkees PLEASE CLICK HERE...THE EMBEDDING FEATURE HAS BEEN DISABLED. Drats

      How fun is that?

Good lord how young they were!

Look at little Davy Jones groovin' with his bad self, swinging those hips and playing his tambourine! You can tell that Micky couldn't actually play the drums at all, you can almost see him counting out the rhythm.

Next up - Smash Mouth : PLEASE CLICK HERE...THE EMBEDDING FEATURE HAS BEEN DISABLED

Smash Mouth did a really fun version of this song and for me to say I almost like it as much as Mickey's version is a lot!!! I like the fact that they "kicked it up a notch" without going overboard to re-create the song.

Most people associate this song with the movie Shrek nowadays, but I will always think of Micky Dolenz and the Monkees!

How about you all? Any preferences to either one?

      Medical anomolies and a uni-brow

what more could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon?

M and I had a wonderful day yesterday. We met up with two great new friends: The Village Carpenter and her partner Presbyfruit for a beautiful day in Philadelphia!

And what better way to spend a beautiful sunny April afternoon then to go to the museums!

Our first stop was the Mutter Museum for all things weird and gross (I love this kind of stuff). We the Soap Woman - she was buried in a very high alkaline type soil which turned her into a big bar of soap!

I don't know...something about showering with a human sized bar of soap kind of made me feel dirty.

We also saw a HUGE ovarian cyst that was bigger than a basketball, an enlarged colon

and a plaster cast of co-joined twins Chang and Ang (who between them had 21 children...ew).

      (photos courtesy of Roadsideamerica.com)

Some of the stuff was pretty interesting...some quite disturbing as well - lot's of jarred miscarried fetuses that were hard to look at.

After almost 2 hours of looking at diseased livers and cancer ridden lungs, enlarged colons and faces sliced up like pieces of bread....we were really hungry and found a nice little spot called Jack's Firehouse which was right across the street from the Eastern Penitentiary.

We sat out side in the warm spring air with thick castle like walls of the Penitentiary creating a lovely ambiance.

(Hey - do we know how to have fun or what?)

Yummy salads, smoked chicken sandwich and pan seared salmon were consumed over wonderful conversation. It's a lot of fun getting to know new people and we really are enjoying our new friendship with these two ladies.

Along with the check came 4 chocolate chip cookies...warm and gooey from the oven.....mmmmmmmm...yum! Beats the heck out of a mint wrapped in plastic that is for sure! Very nice touch!

We had tickets to the 3:00 showing of the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Casually walking down to the museum - trying to burn off some of those lunch calories we consumed, we got to enjoy some of the charm of the neighborhoods surrounding the museum district of Philly. There were quite a few folks doing the "Rocky thing" by running up the top of the steps and triumphantly raising their arms!

With more than an hour to kill before the Kahlo exhibit, we checked out one of the nearby exhibits of American Art. I think the Thomas Eakins collection was probably my favorite by far, but I loved the Annunciation by Henry Ossawa Tanner. Even the Village Carpenter gal got to drool over some fine examples of early American furniture!

The main event was definitely a high point in the day for me though. I am not sure what I was expecting, but the Frida Kahlo exhibit was brilliant. I have read about her in Art History class and I've seen prints of her work over the years, but to see them in person and to hear her story really made me appreciate the artist even more.

Kahlo's paintings are often dark and show the pain she was experiencing. "Henry Ford Hospital"was painted after she had a miscarriage. The imagery is shocking and harsh: Kahlo lying on a blood soaked hospital bed, a dead fetus is above her and also a snail representing how long the miscarriage took. "The Two Fridas" represented the depression she experienced when Diego Riveria divorced her. In one image she holds a small portrait of Diego which from which an artery is attached...it loops through her heart and back out to the second image of her self and ends as she holds a surgical clamp trying to stop her heart from bleeding.

Her painting: "A Few Small Nips" was painted about a drunken man who stabbed his wife wife to death. The blood spills all around the bed and room and is even dotted along the frame itself.

Another very harsh painting was "The Suicide of Dorothy Hale". Hale is represented by three distinct figures - first a small black figure as she starts her descent from the building, then falling among the clouds and finally the bloody landing and an inscription written in blood red that says: "In New York City on the 21st of October 1938, at 6:00 in the morning, Dorothy Hale committed suicide by throwing herself from a very high window in the Hampshire House. In her memory [...], this retablo was executed by Frida Kahlo."

Originally commissioned to paint a portrait of Hale by the publisher of Vanity Fair Magazine to be given to Hales mother as a gift , Kahlo painted it in ex-voto style which is a devotion or testimony of the person's death. The publisher was horrified at the painting and did not think it was appropriate as a memorial portrait to be given to Hale's grieving mother.

"The Love Embrace of the Universe", "My Dress Hangs There" and "Moses" were three paintings that weren't nearly as dark and had so much vivid imagery in them I wish I had time to just stare at them for a while longer. Unfortunately, the lines were long and it was very crowded, it was very hard to get too close to them.

I definitely have a new found appreciation for Frida Kahlo's art. She is not for everyone, that is for certain.

What a great day! Dark and macabre brightened up with great new friends and a warm chocolate chip cookie on top!

      Life is good!

      What Planet should you rule?

I copied this from the Queen of Jupiter - Sharkb

      You Should Rule Venus

Venus is a mysterious, stormy planet - shrouded in a thick layer of clouds.

You are perfect to rule Venus, because you are quite emotional and volatile yourself.

Your emotions change as rapidly as the weather on Venus, and both you and the planet are incomprehensible to others.

While you are not a logical thinker, you are quite empathetic.

You can care for and understand others, but your emotions swirl too quickly to truly understand yourself.

      Meeting in person

M and I had a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow bloggers The Village Carpenter and Presbyfruit for lunch on Saturday.

The lunch went really well, I think we all felt safe that none of us were ax murderers or stalkers and had a lot of fun meeting with people who seem to share similar odd senses of humor and fun stories.

They are both just as funny and sweet in person as they are on-line and I hope we are going to try to meet up again sometime!

Maria had replied to one of my posts that she has met 3 fellow bloggers and 2 did not go well.

I guess it can be hit or miss with people you meet online.

I have to say that for the most part I have been extremely fortunate. Most of the people I have met I have kept in touch with or have become good friends with, but there were 2 that all I have to say is that I am glad I met them in either a public place or in the company of a lot of other people!!!

One of the people I met told me the story of how she was driving up from the south to confront another person she met online because the person mis-lead her into thinking that they had some kind of a "relationship". I sat in a diner with this woman for nearly 2 hours while she told me the whole convoluted story in minute detail.

I made very sure not to take a direct route home that night and was very thankful she did not know my home address...the whole meeting was just kind of creepy.

On the other side of that, M and I met on line on a lesbian chat room I used to host - 11 years later...we're still together!

It is always best to err on the side of caution whenever you are meeting anyone for the first time. Just as we teach our kids to be aware of pedophiles, we as adults need to be just as cautious.
